The city of Algeciras is located in the extreme south of Spain, and is the main link between Europe and Africa. Unlike most other coastal towns in Andalusia, which depend heavily on tourism and fishing, Algeciras is predominantly a port, industry and services city.

It is the most frequently used port in Spain with 5.3 million people passing through each year, and the fifth largest in Europe in terms of goods and container traffic. But the city faces a number of challenges in its capacity to handle these millions of people and provide the necessary public services. So Algeciras City Council has launched its Algeciras Smart City Master Plan, to promote innovation and the use of new technologies to develop a new economic model that improves the smart management of the city.

It has also been chosen by the Andalusian Federation of Town and Provincial Councils (FAMP) as the model for the Digital City of Andalusia because of its geographical, economic and strategic conditions, which facilitate the cooperation of both the public and private sectors, as well as social collaboration.
