Antwerp is the largest city of Flanders, the Flemish or Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. With a population of 524,501 inhabitants, it represents close to 8% of the total Flemish population. Having increased by more than 50,000 inhabitants in the last 15 years, this trend is set to continue.
The city is clearly an attraction pole, but at the same time this poses challenges relating to densification, traffic, housing and the provision of services. These challenges have spurred the city to start building its digital innovation ecosystem right into the core of its historic city centre. A new layer is being added on top of the old city which does not consist of bricks and stones, but of data, networks and support services.
