Athens

Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities, as well as the birthplace of democracy and the cultural centre of Greece. The heart of Ancient Greece, Athens is very much now a modern European city, and a global metropolis which welcomes more than 15 million tourists each year.

For the city of Athens the ongoing digital transformation does not only consist of a series of technical measures for the support of the city services, but most importantly it is considered a fertile ground for communication among city authorities, municipal agencies, cooperating industries, partner organisations and citizens. The main points of focus underlying the digital transformation are: interoperability of digital services; openness of data; ease of implementation; and a unified, holistic format for policy and decision making.

The goal of the new digital strategy is the creation of digital Athens operating on three levels,
internally within the public administration, externally through the city-services for the citizens and visitors, and in a wider scope, mobilising the complete ecosystem of the city.
