Gijón is a large coastal city in northern Spain, and the largest city in the Principality of Asturias Region. Located in the Bay of Biscay, the port is at the centre of many of the local businesses. Apart from directly port related activities, the economy is based on tourism, steel, other metallurgy, livestock rearing and fisheries.
Having gone through a deep industrial regeneration in the 1980s, and then the economic crisis of 2008, Gijón is a city on the up, with a growth strategy that focuses on the development of knowledge and innovation. The city was awarded the Biosphere Destination Certification by the Responsible Tourism Institute, to recognise its efficient tourist management, and has seen a 44.2% increase in visitors over the last four years.
