Iași is a Moldavian city and an important economic and regional cultural centre in north-eastern Romania. Traditionally strong in information and communication technology (ICT), metallurgy, medications, textiles and food industries, it is on its way to becoming a hotspot for the financial and information sector, with many banks and software companies now being present in the city.

Home to the oldest Romanian university and to the first engineering school, Iasi is one of the most important education and research centres of the country. City of the first major union in Romania, of the first literary memorial museum and of the first Museum of Natural History, it is without surprise to find Iași as one of the country’s leaders in Romania’s digital transformation, through which the country hopes to improve public services, increase citizens' level of comfort, and streamline resource consumption.

Iași is now building on its tremendous achievements attained through the DCC challenge to establish itself as a digital powerhouse, based on skills and entrepreneurship. It is in the process of implementing its Integrated Urban Development Strategy 2015-2030 in order to become a sustainable and smart city.

Iași was a participant city in the DCC.
