Mantova is a small/mid-size city of 50,000 inhabitants in Italy’s Northern region of Lombardy. It is noted for its significant role in the history of opera, along with its architectural treasures and artefacts, elegant palaces, and the medieval and Renaissance cityscape.
The official forum on public policy for Italy’s public administrations ranked Mantova 18 out of 106 Italian cities, in its 2017 Smart Cities ranking. A positive and satisfying result at first glance. However, a closer look reveals Mantova ranked 38th in Digital Transformation and 23rd in Research & Innovation. In almost all the other specific rankings Mantova is placed close to the top 10, meaning the city has great potential but is lagging behind in the process of digitalisation.
