Szombathely is the tenth-largest city in Hungary with a population of around 79,000 inhabitants. Located in western Hungary, it is the administrative centre of the Vas county, close to the border with Austria. It is the oldest recorded city of Hungary, founded by the Romans in 45 AD.

The economic activities of Szombathely encompass commerce, automatic services and industry, with various multinational IT manufacturing companies, electronics and automatic sectors being present in the city. Logistic services linked to freight transport is a substantial part of the city’s tertiary sector as the city is located at the north-south road and railway corridors that connect the Central European region to the Mediterranean region.

The city has made important strides in becoming a modern and digitalised city of innovation.  It participates in DG-Connect’s Digital Europe Programme, European Digital Innovation Hubs, to encourage the city’s uptake of digital technologies to stimulate growth and innovation. Through this programme, the city has drawn up a policy framework for the digitalisation of the city’s infrastructure and economy in partnership with the County Vas and the Pannon Business Network (PBN) Association.

Through its participation in the ICC, the city aims to continue driving forward its transition into the digital economy and into a hub of innovation.
