Trikala

Sitting in the center of the Greek mainland, in the region of Thessaly, Trikala has a history that dates back to the 3rd millennium BC with the ancient city of Trikke. According to the Greek mythology, the god of medicine Asklipios installed his medical center in Trikala - the evidence of which still exists today.

With the city surrounded by agricultural landscapes, it’s no surprise that the local economy is mainly based on agriculture, but it also has an ever increasing creative industry. This is due in part to hosting the biggest Greek national Christmas thematic village which attracts more than one million visitors each year and stimulates the growth of the creative industry through its many parallel events.

Trikala

Although local GDP is among the lowest in Greece and  Europe, the average unemployment rates are approximately equal to the Greek average (27% in 2016). Despite these restraints, Trikala has a long history in urban innovation from being labelled the first Digital City in Greece in 2004 to taking part in numerous European projects on smart city development.
