Venice is a city in Italy that lies along the coastline of Italy’s Veneto region in the northern part of the country. Built on more than 100 islands in the lagoon of the Adriatic Sea, the city is unique for its canals - rather than roads for transportation. Along with its canals, the city is famous for its Renaissance and Gothic architecture. As a tourist hotspot, Venice’s economy is heavily reliant on tourism. Venice also serves important administrative functions, as the capital of the Veneto region, and is home to two universities.

Using Horizon 2020 funds, a Smart City Secretariat was appointed by the city, responsible for creating a Venetian Smart City and Community. The initiative aims to use advanced technology and digital solutions to meet the city’s various challenges and improve the quality of life for its residents.

Venice has also signed the Green Digital Charter, committing the city to pursue climate objectives through digital means.
