Visitors and residents of Sofia can now rent electric bicycles to get around town after the first electric bicycle sharing system was installed in the city last month.
Launched by Bulgarian start-up company Eljoy bikes with the support of the Sofia Municipality and Cleantech Bulgaria, the country’s first clean technology network, the initiative aims to reduce the number of cars on Vitosha Mountain and air pollution in Sofia.
The bicycle sharing system was a winner of the Sofia Urban Challenge hosted by Sofia Municipality and Cleantech Bulgaria to find the best start-up companies with projects in the field of air purification and improvement of the environment in Sofia.
The first bicycle station includes 10 electric bicycles and is placed in front of the National History Museum for visitors and residents to reach Vitosha in a convenient and ecological way.
The e-bikes are equipped with a GPS system that features an established route to the Golden Bridges (Zlatnite Mostove), and are available every day from 9am to 7pm.
Bulgarian start-up company Eljoy bikes develops electric bikes that, on the one hand, protect the environment and, on the other hand, eliminate the inconvenience of ordinary bikes such as hill climb and slower travel.
